Aftercare - Tattoo Armour
Non-Adhesive
1. After your tattoo your artist will apply a wrap of Tattoo Armour absorbent pad) to your tattoo. Keep this wrap on overnight. Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight while it’s in the wrap and do not tamper with the edges or tape of the wrap. *DO NOT SHOWER with the wrap on. Avoid getting outside moisture on/around the wrap. Monitor the area around the Tattoo Armour for any fluid that may leak out. If fluid begins to leak out from under the bandage proceed to steps 2-7 even if the overnight period has not passed.
2. When you are ready to remove your wrap make sure you’re in your own bathroom at home (or where you are staying) - do not attempt to remove the wrap in a public restroom or other area. Get into the shower and carefully remove your wrap.
3. Turn on the shower and wash your body and then hands with liquid antibacterial soap before touching your tattoo.
4. After you remove your wrap your tattoo will feel slimy to the touch. Using your clean, open hand and unscented/mild liquid antibacterial soap (such as Dial in ‘Gold’ or Softsoap in ‘Crisp Clean’), gently lather up your tattoo until the slimy feeling is gone. Do not scrub, scratch or otherwise abrade your tattoo. do not touch your tattoo with a loofah, washcloth, or anything else but your clean hand. Do not use bar soap to clean your tattoo.
5. Once the slimy feeling is gone from your tattoo rinse off the lather completely with warm to hot water, whichever is most comfortable.
6. After the lather is completely gone exit the shower and pat your tattoo dry with a clean paper towel and/or allow your tattoo to completely air dry. Do not touch your tattoo with a bath towel.
7. Once your tattoo is completely air dry you can very gently apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or whatever non-scented ointment you prefer. Do not use ointment from a tub, find one that can be squeezed from a tube and only use clean, freshly washed hands to apply.
8. Over the first 1-2 weeks you will begin to feel your tattoo tighten more and more until it forms a scab or tight/dry skin. Continue with steps 3-7 very gently during this time. Do not over moisturize your tattoo *. The layer of moisturizer should be thinner than a sheet of printer paper and should still allow your tattoo to breathe while being moisturized. The scab/skin will naturally crack and peel/fall off on its own - it is very important not to itch or attempt to pick off the scab/dry skin flakes. Move as carefully as you can during this time - if the area of the skin where your tattoo is stretched too tight due to movement or forceful contact the tattoo can break/crack and will be very painful and increase chances of infection and scarring.
9. For the next two weeks repeat steps 3-7 twice a day. If you get very sweaty or your tattoo comes into contact with an unclean material/surface/object then additionally wash it according to steps 3-7 as soon as you are able.
Extra Tips for after your appointment:
Make sure any bedding and clothing that will touch your tattoo are freshly washed to avoid any dirt or bacteria.
Wash your hands frequently, especially before touching your tattoo.
Be mindful of the surfaces you touch during your healing process. Avoid resting or rubbing your tattoo on anything that could introduce bacteria or dirt.
If you have a lower leg tattoo, take it easy for the next few days. Limit physical activity, including walking and running, as these can increase swelling and sensitivity. Elevate your leg whenever possible to help reduce swelling.
Avoid scratching or picking at scabs. Let your tattoo heal naturally to avoid scarring.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo and cause irritation.
Follow any specific aftercare instructions from your tattoo artist as each artist may have unique recommendations for the best healing.
